Distribution Spermogonial and aecial stages on Pinus spp. in North and Central America. Uredinial and telial stages on various Convolvulaceae in the Americas and Caribbean islands. Reported also from Java, Indonesia (Boedijn 1959).
Characteristics Heteroecious macrocyclic rust fungus. Spermogonia on Pinus needles, 300–650 × 100–350 µm; aecia flattened laterally, 0.9–2.3 × 0.3–0.6 mm; aeciospores 17–27 × 13–20 µm, verrucose. Uredinia subepidermal, orange-yellow, 0.25–1 mm, producing urediniospores 18–27 × 13–21 µm, densely verrucose. Telia pulvinate, reddish orange, producing cylindrical to clavate teliospores 45–80 × 19–25 µm, thin-walled, smooth, with apical gelatinous layer 20–40 µm thick. Basidia formed by septation of probasidia.
Notes Causal agent of leaf rust of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) in the Americas and the Caribbean. Not yet reported from Asia on cultivated sweet potato, but found on Merremia umbellata in Indonesia. Because of wide host range and distribution, genetic differentiation among populations is likely. Molecular studies (Chappell & Rausher 2011, 2015) revealed co-evolutionary dynamics between Coleosporium ipomoeae and Ipomoea species.
Economic importance Major pathogen of sweet potato in the Americas and Caribbean; potential quarantine risk for Asia. Preventive measures recommended against introduction of infected propagation materials.
