Distribution China and Japan (Hiratsuka 1937; Zhuang 1983; Wang 1984; Hiratsuka et al. 1992; Zhuang & Wei 1999; Zhuang 2001).
Characteristics Microcyclic rust fungus. Telia small, grouped on yellowish lesions along leaf veins on the abaxial surface, subepidermal, erumpent, pulvinate, reddish orange to reddish brown. Teliospores one-celled, obovoid to fusiform, 20–55 × 9–15 µm, colorless, thin-walled, smooth; produced in basipetal succession from basal sporogenous cells. No spermogonia, aecia, or uredinia known.
Notes The taxonomic distinction between Coleopucciniella and Coleopuccinia has long been debated. Earlier authors (Thirumalachar & Whitehead 1954) separated them by telial features, but Zhuang (1983) synonymized Coleopucciniella under Coleopuccinia. Later phylogenetic and morphological analyses (Cao et al. 2018) supported their distinction, though no Coleopucciniella species were included in that study. Cummins & Hiratsuka (1983, 2003) suggested these genera are evolutionary derivatives of demicyclic Gymnosporangium.
Economic importance Minor plant pathogen on Rhaphiolepis spp., with limited known economic impact; mainly of taxonomic and phylogenetic interest.
