| Distribution | Native to South America; now widely distributed in the Americas, Pacific Islands, East and Southeast Asia, Australasia, and South Africa. Introduced to Japan (2007), Hainan, China (2009), Indonesia (2015), and Singapore (2017). |
| Characteristics | Autoecious macrocyclic rust fungus. Sori on leaves, shoots, and fruits forming yellowish-orange to grayish lesions; urediniospores (15–26 × 13–23 µm), colorless and minutely echinulate; teliospores (25–50 × 14–28 µm), two-celled, smooth, yellowish to light brown. Basidia 4-celled producing globose basidiospores. Causes severe infection and dieback in Myrtaceae hosts. |
| Notes | Life cycle debated: basidiospore infection and recombination confirmed (McTaggart et al. 2018); possibly autoecious complete cycle (Glen 2007, Morin 2014). Infectivity via urediniospores dominant. Over 445 host species in 73 genera (CABI, 2022). Several pathogenic groups reported (Coelho 2001, Aparecido 2003). |
