Distribution Known only in Japan (Hiratsuka et al. 1992; Ono 2014).
Characteristics Heteroecious macrocyclic rust fungus. Spermogonia produced in dense groups on yellowish leaf spots of Ixeris, subepidermal, globose to subglobose, 74–110 × 79–118 µm, surrounded by paraphyses. Aecia subepidermal, erumpent, Aecidium-type, concentrically arranged; aeciospores 14–19 × 12–18 µm, colorless, 1–2 µm thick, distinctly verrucose. Uredinia on abaxial surface of Metanarthecium, subepidermal, erumpent, powdery, dark cinnamon-brown; urediniospores obovoid or ellipsoid, 20–29 × 14–24 µm, evenly echinulate, 2–3 µm thick, with 2–3 equatorial germ pores. Telia erumpent and blackish; teliospores two-celled, 38–67 × 14–26 µm, ellipsoid or obovoid, weakly constricted, apically thickened (7–20 µm), brown, with persistent pedicel.
Notes Puccinia metanarthecii alternates between Ixeris (Asteraceae) and Metanarthecium or Aletris (Nartheciaceae). It was once confused with P. pachycephala, but Ono (2014) clarified their distinctness through morphological comparison and cross-inoculation experiments. P. pachycephala alternates between Ligularia and Veratrum, unlike P. metanarthecii.
Economic importance Minor rust fungus with no known economic impact; primarily important for studies on host alternation and rust taxonomy in Liliales and Asteraceae–Nartheciaceae systems.
