Distribution Known only from Japan (He & Kakishima 1993; Kobayashi 2007).
Characteristics Heteroecious demicyclic rust fungus. Spermogonia and aecia formed in dense groups on whitish or yellowish lesions on Akebia leaves, often causing leaf deformation; spermogonia subepidermal, 100–130 × 90–125 µm, subglobose to ovoid; aecia Aecidium-type, erumpent, powdery, yellow; aeciospores subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, 19–33 × 17–33 µm, verrucose. Uredinia unknown. Telia produced on abaxial leaf surface of Phyllostachys spp., dense or scattered, pulvinate, dark chestnut-brown; teliospores two-celled, fusiform to cymbiform, 52–95 × 10–20 µm, apically thickened (up to 35 µm), smooth, on persistent pedicels up to 120 µm long.
Notes Originally misidentified as Puccinia nigrocoidea by Hiratsuka & Kaneko (1977), but later described as a distinct species by He & Kakishima (1993) based on teliospore morphology. The heteroecious life cycle connecting Akebia and Phyllostachys was experimentally confirmed. Teliospores are characterized by a unique long horn-like apex distinguishing it from related bamboo rusts.
Economic importance Minor rust fungus limited to Japan; no major agricultural significance but important taxonomically for understanding host alternation between woody lianas (Akebia) and bamboos (Phyllostachys).
