Distribution Known only from Japan (Harada 1977, 1986; Hiratsuka et al. 1992; Ono et al. 2001).
Characteristics Heteroecious macrocyclic rust fungus. Spermogonial and aecial infections form large confluent lesions with distinct margins on Petasites leaves; spermogonia subepidermal, 100–170 × 100–185 µm, subglobose to ovoid; aecia Aecidium-type, erumpent, powdery, pale yellowish to dull white; aeciospores 12–23 × 10–20 µm, verrucose. Uredinia and telia produced on abaxial leaf surface of Carex spp., subepidermal, erumpent, and brown to black; urediniospores 16–25 × 13–20 µm, echinulate, 2–4 µm thick, cinnamon-brown; teliospores 37–75 × 12–23 µm, two-celled, obovoid to clavate, apically thickened (5–15 µm), chestnut-brown, with persistent pedicels up to 70 µm.
Notes Described by Harada (1977) as a heteroecious rust alternating between Petasites japonicus (Asteraceae) and Carex dimorpholepis (Cyperaceae). Additional related species later synonymized. The species demonstrates clear host alternation between two distinct families and is restricted to Japan.
Economic importance Rust fungus with limited distribution and minor ecological impact. Of interest primarily for its host-alternating biology among Petasites and Carex species.
