Characteristics Microcyclic rust fungus producing only telial stage. Telia minute, dense, often forming concentric rings on pale yellowish or whitish lesions on abaxial leaf surface; subepidermal, surrounded by thin-walled peridium, erumpent, pulvinate, and black. Teliospores long-pedicellate, two-celled, 30–46 × 18–25 µm, ellipsoid, rounded at both ends, slightly constricted at septum; wall cinnamon- to chestnut-brown, 2–3 µm thick laterally, 4–7.5 µm at apex, smooth; germ pores apical in upper cell and septal in lower cell; pedicel persistent up to 110 µm.
Notes Puccinia benkei is a microcyclic rust known only from the telial stage on Sedum species in the Crassulaceae family. It is one of few rusts infecting succulent plants. The species was first described from Japan and later confirmed in the Russian Far East.
Economic importance Minor rust fungus of wild and ornamental Sedum species; no significant economic impact but of interest for host-range studies among Crassulaceae.
