Characteristics Autoecious macrocyclic rust fungus. Spermogonia and aecia rarely observed; spermogonia adaxial, subcuticular, flat hymenia. Aecia subepidermal, Caeoma-type, erumpent with sparse paraphyses; aeciospores subglobose to ellipsoid, 20–27 × 16–22 µm, echinulate. Uredinia on abaxial leaf surface, Uredo-type, orange-yellow, surrounded by paraphyses; urediniospores 20–28 × 16–22 µm, pale yellowish, echinulate. Telia dark brown to black, producing (2–)3(–4)-celled teliospores 35–55 × 19–28 µm, bilaminate wall with cinnamon-brown inner layer and colorless outer layer, sparse warts; pedicels up to 100 µm long.
Notes Occurs on numerous Potentilla and Ivesia species across North America. Spermogonia and aecia infrequently observed. Uredinial and telial morphology closely related to Phragmidium section on Potentilla, but distinguished by teliospore wall layering and host specificity.
Economic importance Minor rust pathogen on Potentilla and related genera; mainly of taxonomic interest, not economically significant.
